Abstract

This article describes the historical evolution of the right to work. It is shown that the antecedents of this right are found in the ideas of the left-wing French enlighteners of the 18th century. The enshrinement of the right to work in the constitutional texts of the 20th century was slow and obeyed Marxist and social democratic demands. Its consolidation occurred after the Second World War, at which time there seemed to be a consensus on the minimum economic and social rights that should be protected by international law. In Mexico, it was not until the reform of December 12, 1978, that the right to work became a constitutional obligation.
