Abstract

The Catholic Church in Paraguay severed its ties with Rome as a consequence of the Independence Revolution. Bishop Pedro García Panés was suspended by the dictator José Gaspar de Francia, who appointed an ecclesiastical provider to administer the diocese for several decades. This article examines the process of replacing the Royal Patronage with the Republican Patronage from the proclamation of the Republic until the reestablishment of relations with the Holy See. Additionally, it discusses the measures taken to ensure the loyalty of priests to the new political order.
