Abstract

In this study we try to analyze the “juntista” movement in the city of Lérida at the beginning of the War of the Independence. In May 1808 Lérida was the first Catalan city in rebelling against the Napoleonic invasion. On June 2 due to the absence of public authorities this province created an assembly for local defense. Later the “Junta Superior de Cataluña” was created, presided by the Bishop Torres.

Author Biography

Antoni Sánchez i Carcelén, Universidad de Lleida

(Lleida,  1979),  se  licenció en Historia en 2001 por la Universidad de Lleida.  Con la tesina  “El  Trienni  Liberal  a  Lleida (1820-1823)” obtuvo el DEA (2005) y ganó el Premio de la Societat d’Estudis Històrics de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans, sirviendo como base de su primer libro La revolució liberal a Lleida (1820-1823), 2006. El 14 junio de 2007 presentó su tesis doctoral “Absolutisme  i  liberalisme  a  Lleida  (1814-1828)”, calificada con Excelente Cum Laude, tesis galardonada con el Jaume Vicens Vives d’Història Contemporània  (Institut  d’Estudis  Catalans, 2007). En 2008 publicó su segundo libro La Guerra del Francès a Lleida. La insurgència lleidatana contra Napoleó i les seves conseqüències (1808-1814) y obtuvo el XIX premio Josep Lladonosa d’Història Local dels Països Catalans por la obra Els defensors de Ferran VII a Lleida (1823-1833), publicada en 2009. Actualmente es investigador asociado del Departamento de Historia de la Universidad de Lleida.
