In the Colombia 19th century, one of the relevant topics was the role that the Catholic religión and Catholic Church should play in society. In this article we will see how this issue was trated in the constitutionalism of that century. The article studies from a first constitutionalism that preceded and was parallel to the Constitution of Cadiz of 1812, until the momento in which the conservative sectors, together with the Church as an institution, expressed their world ideals in the Constitution of 1886 and the Concosdat signed with the Vatican in 1887. In the 19th Century we can observe the tensions that arose, above all, due to liberal constitutions. We demonstrate that, despite these tensions, at the end of the 19th Century the stability was achieved in religious matters, which the Catholic Church desired since the beginning of the republic.
