Abstract

By titling this article 'Sovereignty in British Legal Doctrine' rather than 'The British Doctrine of Sovereignty', the author wanted to underline that he does not only going to examine the doctrine of Parliamentary Sovereignty, genuinely British, but also the sovereignty of the people, which is common throughout western juridical and political theory.

Author Biography

Joaquín Varela Suanzes-Carpegna, Universidad de Oviedo

Catedrático de Derecho Constitucional de la Universidad de Oviedo e Investigador Titular del Instituto Feijoo del Siglo XVIII. Es autor de más de setenta trabajos dedicados a la historia constitucional española y comparada, entre ellos su reciente libro “Sistema de gobierno y partidos políticos: de Locke a Park” (Madrid, 2002), cuya versión italiana se publicará en breve, y el extenso “Estudio Preliminar” a “Conde de Toreno: Discursos Parlamentarios” (Oviedo, 2003). Fundador y Director de "Historia Constitucional", codirige también "Fundamentos”. Forma parte del Comité Científico del “Giornale di Storia Costituzionale”, del Consejo de Redacción de los “Cuadernos de Estudios del Siglo XVIII” y del Consejo Asesor de la “Revista de Estudios Políticos” y de la “Revista Española de Derecho Constitucional”.
