Abstract

The Constitutional Charter of 1826 was the fundamental law with the longer duration in the history of contemporary Portugal being in force for three distinct periods (1826-1828, 1834-1836 and 1842-1910). However, the original document has been revised four times throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (1852, 1885, 1895-1896 and 1907), representing different moments in the realm’s political evolution. This paper aims to summarize the successive phases of constitutional reform, with particular emphasis on what happened in 1885, since that was a reform agreed between the two main political forces of the monarchy. This moment also represent a milestone for the characterization of the alternation in power between the “Regenerador” (center-right wing) and “Progressista” (center-left wing) parties in force until the eve of the Republic.
