Abstract

The aim of this article is to contribute to the debate on the significance of the parliamentary assemblies in Southern Europe in the XX century by studying the parliamentary speakership in Spain (1943-1977), Italy (1924-1943) and Portugal (1935-1974). To carry out this analysis we will study the procedure by which the speakers were appointed, clarify the functions they performed and conduct a prosopographical analysis of the individuals who held this post, comparing them with the speakership in the democratic parliaments that were created in the same countries after the dictatorships had ended.
