During the last years, legal historiography has highlighted the intrinsic relationship between Catholicism and the first Spanish-American constitutionalism. In the present work, we propose to deepen this relationship through the study of one of the most representative works of what could be called “Catholic republicanism”: El triunfo de la libertad sobre el despostimo, published in 1821 by the Venezuelan hero of independence Juan Germán Roscio. We are especially interested in the analysis of the constitutional categories employed by Roscio to articulate his political-religious discourse, highlighting the interpretive tools used and their connection with the legal culture of his time.
