Abstract

The Polish Constitution of 1791 is the great unknown in Europe. Although it was promulgated few months before of the French Constitution of that year, it never had the same resonance. Granted at a very delicate moment for the Reczspospolita, its origins are closely linked to the crisis of the Polish state, which was the main reason for its short existence. This article will examine these facts and the difficulties it presented as a constitution, as well as the reasons for its failure.
