Joaquín Varela was not only the author of an extensive scientific production, but he also made a decisive contribution to make constitutional history an autonomous discipline. In his view, constitutional history was a scientific field in which contemporary history, constitutional law, history of political thought and philosophy of law converged. His methodological contributions, as well as the creation of journals, publishing houses and research centres devoted to constitutional history, pursued the goal of creating a new scientific discipline.
