Recovering a critical text by Campomanes on the work of Accarias de Serionne and its translation by Marcoleta., Spanish Enlightenment; Public Sphere; Translations; Pedro Rodríguez de Campomanes; Jacques Accarias de Serionne; Domingo Marcoleta.Abstract
In 1773 an anonymous writing was published. His authorship can be attributed to Pedro Rodríguez de Campomanes. The main objective of the writing was to refute a set of ideas presented in an important economic book by the Frenchman Jacques de Accarias de Serionne, as well as the quality of the Spanish translation of it which Domingo de Marcoleta had begun to publish in 1772. The anonymous author of the writing came out in defense of Spanish economic and imperial interests, in his opinion, not well defended neither by Serionne nor by Marcoleta. But, at the same time, it also showed in detail what the appropriate criteria should have been to produce a correct translation of Accarias´’ book, thus becoming a brief instruction guide for this. Due to the lack of knowledge of the writing and its limited circulation at its time, a reissue of the writing is presented in the Appendix of this work.
