Abstract

The Spanish Constitution of 1812 was translated into English and it was well known by English Politicians. Some of the most important newspapers wrote about the Constitution, especially in 1813, 1820 and 1823, and Spanish immigrants used those newspapers to show their thoughts about the Constitution. This fundamental law was also studied by Jeremy Bentham and Blaquiere, who found in their articles some good political principles. Nevertheless, they thought that the Constitution should have to be improved in some ways: colonies, religion, relationship between Executive and Legislative branches, and the amendment procedure. Even the British Parliament discussed about the Spanish Constitution, mainly about its application in Naples. In these discussions, Lord Holland played an important role, as he was very connected with Spanish affairs.
